Information

Do you get prompted to update links when you open a spreadsheet? If so it’s because Excel is pulling information from another source, when you open the spreadsheet the data that is there is from the last time you opened it, Excel is asking would you like to pull down the data from the other source and update the values. Usually the answer is yes, but sometimes you may want to do something with the previous data before you update them which is why Excel asks. If you do want Excel to just automatically update the values every time, read on..

Solution

To set Excel to automatically update links when you open this workbook:

  1. Open the spreadsheet that has the linked data in it (this is the workbook you usually open that prompts you to update)
  2. On the Data tab select Edit Links
  3. Click Startup Prompt…
  4. Choose which start up option you would prefer (automatically update the links is the last option).
  5. Click OK and click Close

Tips

Excel can link to data from various sources, such as Excel spreadsheets, Access databases, SharePoint sites and more.
